2017 MCPS Superintendent's Breakfast Event
Join Superintendent Jack R. Smith, county government and business leaders and special guest
Erin O’Shea, President of Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), for a discussion of the institute’s
important efforts to support a STEM pipeline for students in the popular ACES program.
The Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success or ACES program is a critical collaboration between
Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, and the Universities at Shady Grove.
The program provides a seamless approach across these organizations to help students, who might not
see college as a possibility, earn a bachelors degree.
STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education is important because technology
and the skills that build and support it pervade all aspects of society. STEM skills are regularly
identified as necessary for the jobs of tomorrow.
More about Erin O’Shea:
O’Shea joined HHMI in 2013 from Harvard University, where she was director of the Harvard Faculty
of Arts and Sciences Center for Systems Biology. Ms. O’Shea is considered a leader nationally in
scientific research and her current work focuses on fields of gene regulation, signal transduction, and
systems biology. (full biography)
